Published: Reading: 1 min

Abstract

In regard to the article “Management of pediatric patients with spontaneous pneumomediastinum: A retrospective chart review” by Patel et al. [1], “spontaneous pneumomediastinum” has traditionally been classified as primary or secondary spontaneous pneumomediastinum (PSP and SSP, respectively). PSP is defined as pneumomediastinum occurring in patients without known underlying lung disease, and secondary, when there is underlying disease or other causes such as trauma. Despite significant advances, its terminology remains unchanged, and has not evolved to greater precision.
