Doing Much with Little: Impressive Results in Babies with Esophageal Atresia in the West Bank and East Jerusalem
Abstract
Drs. Tawil, Mansour, and colleagues have performed an impressive review of all open esophageal atresia repairs over the past decade across a large cohort of major Palestinian hospitals in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. (1) The challenges in the region are well-documented (2), and what the pediatric surgeons have accomplished in their resource-limited setting is commendable. Having worked alongside them in both the West Bank and Gaza, I have witnessed their remarkable resilience and ingenuity in overcoming challenges related to the four S's – staff, stuff, space, and systems.
