What the experts said
The study was conducted by the Eastern United States Pediatric Surgery Network (Red de Cirujanos Pediátricos del Este de Estados Unidos).
The study created and distributed a survey among pediatric surgeons to understand different types of surveillance practices for esophageal atresia patients.
139 people responded to the survey.
75% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with current esophageal atresia follow-up guidelines.
Only 37% of respondents had scheduled visits at patient discharge.
80% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that endoscopies should have a structured follow-up schedule.
Only 36% of respondents performed surveillance endoscopies in asymptomatic patients.
Despite general agreement with guidelines, adherence to them is quite weak.
