What the experts said
The study was a retrospective study conducted in San Francisco using a national database.
The study aim was to compare 30-day readmission rates between index cholecystectomy and cholecystectomy after discharge for acute cholecystitis.
The study included 550 patients with acute cholecystitis.
435 of the 550 patients had an index cholecystectomy.
Index cholecystectomy had a significantly lower 30-day readmission rate of 2.8% compared to 22.6% for cholecystectomy performed after discharge.
Index cholecystectomy appears to be a good option for acute cholecystitis in pediatric patients.
