What the experts said
Bariatric surgery has significant health benefits in adult patients.
There was no difference in weight loss between adolescent and adult gastric bypass groups at five years, with both achieving 25% to 30% weight loss.
Type 2 diabetes remission at five years was 86% in the adolescent gastric bypass group versus 53% in the adult group.
Hypertension remission at five years was 68% in the adolescent gastric bypass group versus 41% in the adult group.
Low ferritin levels occurred in 48% of the adolescent gastric bypass group versus 29% of the adult group at five years.
There was a higher rate of abdominal reoperations in the adolescent gastric bypass group.
Most abdominal reoperations in the adolescent group were for laparoscopic cholecystectomy rather than complications.
Some abdominal reoperations in the adolescent group were for small bowel obstruction.
The higher rate of low ferritin in adolescents may be due to decreased compliance in taking multivitamins.
The higher reoperation rate in adolescents may be due to pediatric bariatric surgeons being more willing to take their patients back to the operating room.
