What the experts said
A prospective multicenter study included 336 patients from 10 different hospitals in the United States
The study investigated whether perioperative care bundles were effective in reducing surgical site infections in patients under 18 years who underwent colorectal surgery
Patients were divided into a high-compliance cohort and a low-compliance cohort depending on adherence to a care protocol consisting of eight elements
Surgical site infections occurred less frequently in patients in the high-compliance group, with a significant difference of 4% compared to an infection rate of 9.7% in the low-compliance group
None of the eight elements provided protection against surgical site infections on its own
Including these protocols in a standardized manner will lead to a lower rate of infections and therefore lower perioperative morbidity
