What the experts said
Short bowel syndrome is defined as the malabsorption state resulting from extensive intestinal resection
Short bowel syndrome incidence is 24 cases per thousand live births
Global neonatal mortality for short bowel syndrome is 37%
Study inclusion criteria were short bowel syndrome less than 60 cm and ultra short bowel syndrome less than 25 cm with no ileocecal valve
The study included 52 patients with short bowel syndrome: 30 short bowel and 23 ultra short bowel syndrome
Primary diagnoses were 55% NEC, 20% gastroschisis, 10% intestinal atresia, and 10% midgut volvulus
75% of patients were premature
73% required central catheter implantation and 70% needed parenteral nutrition
Potential risk factors for death were TPN duration, inability to achieve enteral adaptation, and inability to achieve adequate nutrition
Overall survival in neonatal surgery was 57% with high morbidity and mortality
TPN during the adaptation period had a significant impact on survival
In some Latin American countries, it can be difficult to have perfect TPN for short bowel syndrome patients
Most patients with total necrotizing enterocolitis will survive with short gut or ultra short gut if the decision is made to continue therapy
The important question for short bowel syndrome is long-term survival, not just initial survival
33% of patients in the study had an ostomy
